Description
The term ‘imposter syndrome’ has moved into the common vernacular. It was first described as ‘imposter phenomenon’ by clinical psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes in 1978 as an individual’s experience of intellectual and professional phoniness, in spite of external evidence of their success. Originally linked exclusively to high-achieving women, research from 2011 puts the number of people who feel they have experienced imposter syndrome at 70%, including both men and women.
So, if you feel you have experienced it, you are definitely not alone! It appears to be more common than we think in organisational life, affecting both leaders and those they lead, and holding them back from what they desire or even deserve. We will bring imposter syndrome out of the darkness and into the spotlight, where you can explore your relationship with it – either as someone who feels they experience it or as someone who is working with those who experience it.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this session, you will:
- understand more about imposter syndrome – what the research/literature says
- identify strategies for challenging your own feelings of imposter syndrome
- identify ways to work more effectively with others who feel they experience imposter syndrome
