The Henley Forum 2023 Conference
We are now living in turbulent times – there is economic and security uncertainty, as well as a growing acceptance that climate change is already upon us (with efforts to limit it slowly being put in place but, perhaps, more radical adaptations needed). We are transitioning to a more sustainable economy, but one where global turmoil may have massive social repercussions, plus AI will also lead to changes in the way we think about work. Individuals, organisations and societies need to mobilise the knowledge they already have, as well as learn, adapt and innovate to meet these challenges.
In transition, there is a clear sense of movement, signalling that we have moved beyond talking and planning into action. Transition is the process of passing or developing from one form, stage or state to another. It is often a time of great flux, a period when boundaries are explored and emerging identities are formed. There is a focus on where we have been (‘from what’), and what we have gained along the way (‘with what’), to where we are heading (‘to what’). Transition also focuses on the process or paths that we might take to get there (‘how we’re going’), and the progress we are making (‘how we’re doing’).
In the past year, The Henley Forum has explored different perspectives on what transition means for individuals in terms of new ways of working, thinking and understanding themselves; and organisations and how they adapt and innovate in challenging and changing circumstances. We have navigated questions such as how, as individuals, do we keep learning and adapting at different life stages when our identities can be transitioning as well as our workplaces? And how, as organisations, do we maintain what is worth preserving and still create new knowledge and insight? This year’s conference will pull these threads together and address the global transitions we are all facing.
