Abstract:

Corporate Venture Capital investments have been on the raise for a decade, suggesting how corporate-startups interactions are a fundamental part of organizational growth. Results from large sample data report significant positive benefits for corporates and startups engaging in CVC, from both a technology development and a commercial performance. Yet, we still know little about the driving mechanisms of such phenomenon and strategic outcomes, and this is mostly due to lack of micro and intra-firm data availability, which are hard to collect. I have realized thus a Survey Project to collect data on investment strategies, team management, portfolio characteristics and governance structure of CVC units in the Nordics. The presentation will report insights from Denmark and Norway; the project is currently extending to Finland and Sweden. Results from the Survey Project largely replicate what we know about CVC on macro trends, yet they reveals new and uniquely observed strategic dynamics that can research and practice to bring the understanding of CVC strategies to the next level.
