Greenlands Masterclass - An Invitation to The Thinking Environment
*Exclusive to Henley Partnership members*
‘The most valuable thing we can offer each other is the framework in which to think for ourselves.’ Nancy Kline
Some of the challenges we face today are those created yesterday. Increasingly, people are becoming victims of dependence on the thinking of others, through fear of not being right, rather than being able to generate their own best thinking. Imagine an environment where we re-cultivate the desire to think for ourselves, rather than collapsing into the thinking of another. In this, the Thinking Environment, our independent thinking releases our innate creativity, compassion and connection to be resilient in the face of complexity and uncertainty.

Description
‘The most valuable thing we can offer each other is the framework in which to think for ourselves.’ Nancy Kline
Some of the challenges we face today are those created yesterday. Increasingly, people are becoming victims of dependence on the thinking of others, through fear of not being right, rather than being able to generate their own best thinking. People are disappointed about not being listened to, rather than recognising that other people are simply waiting to speak. We see decisions being made based on what we already know from our own thoughts, rather than welcoming the variety of thoughts and ideas brought by different generations, nationalities and individuals.
Imagine an environment where we re-cultivate the desire to think for ourselves, rather than collapsing into the thinking of another. In this, the Thinking Environment, our independent thinking releases our innate creativity, compassion and connection to be resilient in the face of complexity and uncertainty.
Independent thinking with rigour, courage, imagination and grace takes place within certain conditions – the 10 components of a Thinking Environment. These conditions are not new or difficult, but they rare in the rubble of interruption, judgement, rush, hierarchy, competition and exclusivity. To apply these (together with structures for good thinking in pairs and groups), is to improve the quality of everyone’s thinking and the outcome of each interaction; it will increase performance as we are able to be our natural creative and resourceful selves.
