“I had started looking myself for development and learning opportunities. My line manager was very supportive and took the time to speak to our amazing Apprenticeship and Professional Skills team, who then set up a chat with me.”

“It didn’t take long for me to be sold onto the programme, and then a call with Henley was arranged shortly thereafter.”

“Despite being very busy, my line manager prioritised my development. In our one-on-ones, we talked in depth about what I was learning at Henley and how real work challenges could be used in my assignments.”

Lindsay, his apprenticeship tutor, provided additional support, offering guidance and advice whenever needed.
“I always felt there was someone I could talk to for advice when faced with a problem or need for guidance.”
The collaborative environment, bolstered by the support of three Virgin Atlantic colleagues who were also on the programme, created a strong foundation for success.

“As I started the programme, I was promoted into a more demanding role in a senior team. The broad range of Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours I learned gave me the confidence to work with all departments in the company, ensuring we ‘speak the same language.’”
This newfound confidence translated into enhanced performance and visibility within the organisation.
“My line manager commented that he saw a real positive change in the way I worked over the course of the programme, stepping into the more senior role.”

“We already had aircraft flying between these islands for customers starting or ending their journey in London, so an opportunity arose to sell seats to local customers and holidaymakers, boosting connectivity in the region”
From developing the strategic rationale to gaining senior stakeholder support and managing the complex operational changes required, Andrew led a project that not only enhanced regional connectivity but also contributed to Virgin Atlantic’s bottom line. “We’ve been proudly operating these services since June 2023,” he adds.
Advice for future apprentices: Embrace the journey
For those considering an apprenticeship, Andrew’s advice is clear: the journey is challenging, but the rewards are immense.
“There is never going to be the perfect time to do an apprenticeship, and there will always be a reason to put off starting.”
Reflecting on his own experience, Andrew recalls a particularly significant life event that occurred during his apprenticeship.
“I was incredibly proud to become a father halfway through my apprenticeship course.”
This emphasises the importance of a strong support network.
“The hardest part of the course is those first weeks as you find your feet and learn how to navigate, but you will get through it and each module becomes that little bit easier.”
Andrew also stresses the importance of building a strong support system around you, both personally and professionally.
“I was incredibly fortunate to be supported by my wife, family, friends, and team, who without I wouldn’t have been able to do this.”
