A Dynamic Role in Strategy

Tahnyia Rahman is a key member of Ofcom's Strategy team. Her responsibilities are diverse, including managing projects, critically analysing data and research, providing strategic input on policy projects, and engaging with various teams across the organisation. In her role, she actively contributes to Ofcom's Corporate Strategy function, focusing on both short-term and long-term strategies, and reporting on progress towards organisational goals and objectives.

“I most enjoyed my time in the Strategy team. While most other teams focus on solving current issues, strategy looks beyond that and considers possible future changes in the sectors we regulate and how they may impact Ofcom's role."

Her notable achievements include successfully project-managing the delivery of Ofcom's annual plan and contributing to the development of Ofcom's Three-Year Business Plan.

Embarking on the Management Apprenticeship

In June 2023, Tahnyia began the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, with the goal of completing her End-Point Assessment (EPA) by October 2026.

"I joined Ofcom as a Policy Advisor apprentice and had the amazing opportunity to rotate around different teams within the business, gaining a broad range of knowledge across Ofcom’s sectors."

Reflecting on her decision to pursue the apprenticeship, she shares how it was the perfect way to blend practical experience with academic knowledge, enhancing her professional development.

Transformative Impact of the Apprenticeship

The apprenticeship has been a transformative experience for Tahnyia, equipping her with the knowledge and skills to excel at Ofcom. Her confidence has soared, enabling her to address groups with ease and contribute more effectively to her team and the wider organisation.

"The apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to explore new concepts, theories and techniques. The knowledge gained on the apprenticeship has helped me build a better understanding of the various facets that make up a business and has equipped me with the tools to support my team and contribute to the wider organisation."

Commitment to Personal and Professional Development

Tahnyia has a strong commitment to her professional growth.. The apprenticeship has provided her with a solid foundation of knowledge, skills, and behaviours that will continue to expand with each new module.

"The CMDA apprenticeship covers a wide range of skills and behaviours too. Reflecting on the last year, I have been able to develop many new skills and I’m looking forward to starting my second year and the new opportunities this will bring.”

She is focused on leveraging every bit of learning from the apprenticeship to fuel her growth and drive success.

“I’m very grateful for the support from the university and from Ofcom in supporting my career and development.”

Applying Apprenticeship Learnings to Her Role

Tahnyia’s self-assurance has flourished, enabling her to confidently address groups, a skill showcased in her recent modules on Professional Practice and Organisational Behaviour. She is an active member of the RACE network, demonstrating her commitment to diversity and inclusion. She has been raising awareness of culture events, such as contributing to South Asian Heritage Month and promoting awareness of Ramadan and Eid, through sharing resources and sharing her experiences through written articles and fireside chats with colleagues.

"The RACE network is a great initiative that supports colleagues of all cultures and ethnicities, and it’s a good opportunity to get involved in things I don't get to do as part of my day job," Tahnyia remarked, highlighting how the Organisational Behaviour module has supported her in improving her understanding of diversity, culture, and employee engagement.

Her dedication to fostering teamwork is evident in the team meetings and workshops she conducts, reflecting insights from the Introduction to Business Management module. Her involvement in Ofcom's Plan of Work and Engagement Strategy is a testament to her focus on strategy and business planning.

Growing Impact at Ofcom

Tahnyia’s influence at Ofcom extends beyond her immediate role. She mentors newly hired apprentices and graduates, creating a welcoming and supportive environment. She has developed comprehensive support packs for new joiners and provided guidelines for line managers, which have been praised for easing the transition for new team members.

"Participating in this work has helped me get a better grasp of what this can look like in practice."

Her innovative approach and dedication to mentoring not only enhance the onboarding experience but also strengthen the overall support system within Ofcom.
