Elevating Leadership in Finance: Sarah Grant's Journey through Henley Business School
Sarah Grant, Manager of Financial Accounts at Virgin Atlantic, Senior Leader Apprenticeship | Business Administration
Sarah Grant, Manager of Financial Accounts, has always been an advocate for continuous learning. With nearly a decade of experience in the financial sector, her commitment to personal and professional growth has driven her career forward. Her latest venture, a leadership apprenticeship through Henley Business School, marks a significant step in her journey, equipping her with the skills and confidence to lead in a rapidly evolving industry.
Discovering the apprenticeship
Sarah's introduction to the Henley Business School apprenticeship wasn't her first encounter with structured learning. Before the pandemic, she was enrolled in a Level 5 apprenticeship designed for emerging leaders. However, when the programme was discontinued due to COVID-19, Sarah didn't let this setback deter her ambitions.
“I was keen to continue my personal development in line with my career goals.”
Determined to advance her skills, Sarah reached out to her organisation's Apprenticeship Manager. After browsing the available courses and discussing her options with her line manager, she selected a programme that aligned perfectly with her aspirations—transitioning from a proficient manager to a confident, strategic leader.
"I wanted to obtain a leadership qualification that would provide me with new knowledge and skills applicable to my current role. The programme offered a comprehensive range of topics, and that I knew could help enhance my personal development, transitioning me from being a manager to becoming a leader”
A new approach to learning
“The programme met my expectations for in-person and online learning, networking opportunities, and real-world application.”
Unlike her previous academic experiences, this apprenticeship emphasised the practical application of knowledge through workplace projects. This hands-on approach allowed her to put theory into practice immediately, benefiting both her personal development and her organisation.
One of the most significant differences Sarah observed was the programme's focus on integrating academic learning with practical, work-based projects.
"It was refreshing to see the practical benefits of applying what we learned."
This approach not only reinforced her learning but also provided immediate, tangible benefits to her role within the finance department.
Support from all sides
Sarah’s success in the programme was bolstered by strong support from multiple sources.
“I was lucky to have excellent support throughout my apprenticeship my line manager played a crucial role, always available to discuss modules and potential assignment topics, ensuring that my academic work remained relevant to my day-to-day responsibilities.”
Moreover, the programme fostered a collaborative environment through her learning group, which became a valuable resource.
"I was also fortunate to have colleagues on the same course who offered support and guidance, which made a real difference in my apprenticeship journey. Their support allowed us to share knowledge and ideas and celebrate our accomplishments together.”
Her apprenticeship tutor and the organisation's Apprenticeship Manager also provided ongoing guidance.
Impacting the Organisation
The Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) that Sarah acquired during her apprenticeship have had a direct impact on her team and the broader organisation.
“I’ve been able to challenge the existing status quo and strategy within my team and department to create a diverse, motivated, and efficient team that consistently achieves the company's objectives.”
One of the most transformative aspects of her learning came from the 'Engaging Employees' module.
“The KSBs I developed in the Engaging employee module positively impacted my team. I became interested in analysing our team's diversity and its effect on our performance after observing a decrease in our survey results. I wanted to identify the reasons behind this and determine how our leadership team could use this information to enhance our team's experiences and ensure their satisfaction within the company. I surveyed our team's personalities and presented my findings to them, which helped me strengthen my presentation skills and gain confidence. My manager and colleagues have acknowledged my initiative and passion for understanding our team dynamics and utilising our differences to benefit the team and the organisation.”
Looking to the future
As Sarah continues to apply the KSBs she developed, the impact of her learning is evident.
“The Strategy model has helped guide our future thinking.”
The department has adopted new processes to better align with the company’s long-term goals. The changes she has helped implement have not only improved efficiency but also positioned the finance department to better support the organization’s broader strategy.
Advice for aspiring leaders
“Seize any opportunities that come your way and push yourself out of your comfort zone the programme, while demanding, offers immense rewards in terms of personal growth and professional development.”
Reflecting on her journey, Sarah offers advice for those considering a similar path.
"It's normal to feel overwhelmed at the beginning, but the support system at Henley, from tutors to peers, is there to help you succeed.”
Sarah’s experience is a testament to the value of embracing continuous learning and the positive impact it can have on both individual careers and organisational success.
